  • Sunday Afternoon Live! presents: Pianist and Composer Samuel Fedele (Free Concert!)

    Samuel Fedele, is a classical pianist composer from Battle Creek, Michigan. For the upcoming concert, Fedele plans to play Liszt's two Legends, S. 175, and his third Mephisto Waltz, S. 216. In addition to a Clementi sonata, Op. 37, No. 2 in G major, Fedele may include a Beethoven sonata (op.53), a sonata of his own, or a Liszt transcription of a Bach organ Fugue. The repertoire is still in the planning stages. More information will be provided as the concert approaches. After graduation from Lakeview High in Battle Creek, Fedele went to Canada in 2019 to pursue studies at the University of Windsor with Dr. Philip Adamson. During his education, he won an impressive number of competitive scholarships for musical performance, composition, and academic achievement. Notably among them were the Ron W. Ianni Scholarship for his performance of Prokofiev's 6th piano sonata, the George T. Marshall award for the composition of his Preludes, and the University of Windsor's concerto competition for performing Beethoven's 3rd piano concerto.     Inspired by New Orleans - Born of the Great Lakes! Great Lakes Brass celebrates the culture and traditions of New Orleans, with an emphasis on the style and sounds of brass bands and second lines. We play traditional songs that are iconic to the origin story of jazz, blues, and funk. We also take cues from contemporary brass band culture, riffing on popular and original music through our funky, New Orleans & Michigan lens. Reverence for history is intertwined with ongoing creative adaptation, and our pledge to play it forward. Sunday Afternoon Live! concerts are free to the public, and include a family friendly reception where patrons can meet the artists and enjoy fellowship with each other. The mission of Sunday Afternoon Live! is to enrich the cultural life of the greater Battle Creek Community and to continue the tradition of the First Congregational Church as a patron of artistic creativity and expression.     Soprano Diane Penning and Pianist Henry Koperski bring you  “The Great American Songbook” Mother and son soprano Diane Penning and composer/musician Henry Koperski are both classically trained artists who enjoy sharing their love and excitement for the lyrics and melodies of the Great American Songbook which encompasses significant 20th century American standards, popular songs and Broadway repertoire. In addition, Henry will share original music from his newly released album “Spring Water.” Henry and Diane have respectively travelled the world performing and are excited to bring their shared collaboration closer to home. Penning as a symphony pops artist with over 30 orchestras nationwide and Koperski as pianist/accompanist for luminaries including Alan Cumming, Chita Rivera, Kristin Chenoweth, Bowen Yang and many others. Diane holds a BM in music from the University of Michigan and a MM in voice performance from Western Michigan University. Henry Koperski double majored in Jazz Saxophone Performance and Classical Bassoon Performance earning a Bachelor of music at Western Michigan University.   • Ms. Harmony Zhu – 2024 Gilmore Young Artist – Classical Piano

    Born in 2005, Harmony Zhu began piano study at The Juilliard School at age eight, with teachers including Emanuel Ax and Veda Kaplinsky. She was recognized as a Young Steinway Artist at age 10, and made her debut at Carnegie Hall's Stern Auditorium at age 14. She won the 2021 Young Concert Artists International Auditions, becoming the youngest artist on the YCA roster. Named a 2024 Gilmore Young Artist in 2023, she is a student at the Brearley School in New York, class of 2024. Ms. Zhu will play selections by Chopin, Hayden, Schumann and Scriabin.     Blackthorn is a Detroit area based group who present rich variety of Irish and Celtic songs of emigration, sea shanties, lively jigs and reels, blended with contemporary Irish songs that capture the history and legends of Ireland and it people. They are an annual headliner at the Michigan Irish Fest in Muskegon and the Milwaukee Irish Fest. They also play several venues in the Detroit area on a regular basis. This is their first appearance in Battle Creek and they look forward to making new friends and fans.
