Join us at the Battle Creek Regional History Museum for a very special presentation on the history of Archway Cookies presented by Author Sarah Rice and Leah Swanson Worthington. Archway Cookies was originally founded as the Swanson Cookie Company in 1936 in Battle Creek. In 1954 the company changed its name to the Archway Cookie Company. A family owned business, Archway Cookies became a nationally known company. This presentation will cover the history of the company. Sarah Rice will also be signing copies of her new book: The History of Archway Cookies: A Taste of 20th Century Americana. Archway Cookies records the Cookie Company’s evolution and those involved in making, sharing and selling Archway Homestyle Cookies. This enjoyable, presentation Sarah will discuss the changes Archway Cookie of Battle Creek experienced through the decades. The author has flavored her work with a broad sprinkling of tasty morsels that place the company and its people in the context of American events providing insights into shifting food habits, emerging technologies, business practices, company culture and government regulations throughout the 20th Century. The Sound of Freedom: A Juneteenth Celebration

As we celebrate Juneteenth, Willard Library presents the “Sound of Freedom,” a celebration of African-American musicians who nurtured their art in Battle Creek and went on to change the world. The event will feature a mix of musical performances and conversations, moderated by Sonya Bernard-Hollins, author of ”Here I Stand.” This is a ticketed event. Tickets will be available to pick up at either library location beginning June 1, while supplies last.

Del Shannon Classic Car Show

This is the Inaugural Del Shannon Classic Car Show in Battle Creek, Michigan. The car show will be held on Saturday, June 24th from 11:00 Am to 4:00 PM at the Leila Arboretum. Entrance fee for visitors attending the show will be $5 per person, plus $5 parking. If you are interesting in registering a classic car, truck, military vehicle or motorcycle for this show, advance registration is $20 per vehicle. It will be $25 per vehicle the day of the show. Del Shannon Historic Legacy Event

Join us for this very special program to celebrate the historic legacy of the music legend Del Shannon. The event will include a special presentation by the Del Shannon biographer Brian Young, and an exclusive music presentation by James Popenhagen. Brian Young will be signing his new biography on the life of Del Shannon at this event. The book is to be released in June. There will also be some other surprises at this event! Tickets are $15, and there is limited seating available. The tickets will be sold only at the Battle Creek Regional History Museum and at the Art Center of Battle Creek. This program is part of Del Shannon weekend in Battle Creek, which will begin with a concert on Friday night June 23rd at the Pennfield Performing Arts Center. A History of Michigan Train Robberies

The Steam Railroading Institute in Owosso, Michigan will be holding a special history presentation on Michigan Train Robberies from the era of the steam engine. Come hear tales of russlers and bandits! The Steam Railroading Institute is dedicated to educating the public about steam era railroading in Michigan and the Great Lakes Region. This includes the preservation of the skills and technology for maintaining steam locomotives by operating steam era equipment and providing the experience of steam locomotives in actual operation. Tombstone Preservation, Restoration & Symbology

This event will feature a special presentation on tombstone preservation, restoration and symbology from experts Bobbie Mathis, Andrew Noland and Andrea Chamberlain. Bobbie Mathis is the President of the Union City Society for Historic Preservation, Andrew Noland is the owner of Silent Cities Restoration in Milan, Michigan and Andrea Chamberlain is a cemetery preservationist at Evergreen Cemetery in Girard, Michigan. All three speakers have spent thousands of hours combined in cemetery headstone and monument preservation and restoration. The program will not only address important historical details about headstones and their preservation, but also symbology through the years, as well as types of materials used through the ages. It will be a fascinating panel discussion, combined with a journey through history. A photo presentation on some of the monuments and markers they have saved through the years will also be included.
