3rd Annual Teach a Kid to Fish

Johnny “Jake” Collier passed away at home on February 17th 2022. Jake was a loving, kind man who was cherished by all who knew him. Jake was a lifelong fisherman. One of his wishes was to share his love of fishing with the youth of Battle Creek.
The Collier Family has started a Memorial Fund and would like to honor Jake’s last wishes by gifting 60 fishing rods, some simple tackle, and fishing instructions to Battle Creek Kids.
In partnership with the City of Battle Creek, MI Government Small Business Battle Creek, Battle Creek Parks & Rec Department, and Smitty’s Sport Shop, the rods will be distributed and fishing instructions given on the shoreline of Goguac Lake on August 11, 2024 from 9:00 AM to 12 Noon.
Thanks to generous memorial donors, Small Business Battle Creek, Battle Creek Community Foundation, City of Battle Creek, MI, Battle Creek Parks & Rec Department, and Smitty’s Sport Shop, Sunday, August 11th will be the 3rd annual Johnny “Jake” Collier Teach a Kid to Fish Day! If you have a kid or kids between the ages of 5 and 16, they will be able to register to receive a FREE fishing pole and tackle. They will also be taught how to fish by avid anglers!
The details are as follows:
– 50 fishing pole kits are available free of charge for kids between the ages of 5 and 16.
– Limit 1 per child
– Register in person during the below dates and times for the fishing pole, kit and fishing instructions at Smitty’s 1408 W. Michigan Ave.
Thursday, August 1st, 1:15pm – 2:45pm
Friday, August 2nd, 3:15pm – 4:45pm
Saturday, August 3rd, 12:15pm – 2:45pm
Wednesday, August 7th, 12:15pm – 4:45pm
Friday, August 9th, 11:15am – 4:45pm
Saturday, August 10th, 12:15pm – 2:45pm
If all 50 spots are filled before the end of the registration period, registration will be closed early.
*Poles are not given out at the time of registration. They will be given out at the fishing event. You must be registered to attend.
*If your child received a pole from us last year, they are not eligible for a new pole this year but are encouraged to bring their pole and come fish with us!
